Both men and women can accumulate excess fat which cannot easily be reduced by exercise and diet. Prior to the 1980’s extensive surgery was required to remove these stubborn fatty deposits. In addition, treatment was limited to only a few areas of the body. There were no safe procedures available for safe removal of fat from knees, thighs, and ankles. In the early 1980’s, dermatologic surgeons pioneered techniques to safely remove undesired fat from almost any body area.
Liposuction, in 2012, can now be performed in an office setting. It is not only safe but much more economical than it has been in the past. Tumescent anesthesia allows a surgeon to do liposuction with the patient awake and thus allows a better approach since the patient can move easily in order to remove difficult areas where fat accumulates. Patients are comfortable and find the in-office setting more relaxing and there is less anxiety attached to the procedure.
Laser-assisted liposuction, introduced in 2007, is one of the newest liposuction techniques. This laser technology produces a burst of energy as it enters the fatty tissue that liquefies the fat. Similar to other techniques of liposuction, laser-assisted liposuction requires the use of tumescent solution prior to lipolysis, and standard liposuction to aspirate the liquefied fat.
The laser energy is delivered by a thin laser fiber that is inserted through small incisions in the skin. In addition to breaking up fat cells, the laser energy also heats other tissues. Possible side effects include, but are not limited to, swelling, bruising, burns, numbness and minimal bleeding. The laser is deemed a safe and effective device by the FDA. The only study that has scientifically compared this to standard liposuction has found no differences between these techniques in terms of the results.
The best procedure for a patient depends on many factors. Final results from the treatment are usually long-lasting. Liposuction procedure gives you transitions on what you wear and your feelings about yourself. There is no doubt that positive self-esteem is crucial to long life.
